Dumbells in the past were never my first choice of weight resistance equipment.  I always thought and really felt you needed  to use the barbell to perform the big multijoint compound exercises.  After I was forced to use dumbells only because they were all i had to use, I changed my mind rather quickly.  The first thing I found was that the joint discomfort I sometimes experienced with barbells was gone.  I could adjust the weight I was lifting according to the specific joint that was being stressed.  I also found through unilateral training I could bring up lagging or weak body parts by training them seperatley or by themselves.  So  right now dumbbell workouts are what I prefer to use.  Dont get me wrong, barbells are awesome too, but dumbells are a great alternative to use by themselves.
