Previously, it is not possible to detect some cases of silent heart attacks. Now, a new heart disease research has found a new method for detecting heart attack history. A new type of magnetic resonance imaging technology called delayed enhancement cardiovascular magnetic resonance, which is especially adept at finding damaged heart tissue. A study on 185 patients with heart disease but no record of heart attacks, found that 35 percent of the patients had evidence of a prior heart attack. The new method also found that these so-called non-Q-wave heart attacks were three times more common than silent heart attacks with Q-waves. After two years, people who had suffered a silent, non-Q-wave heart attack had about 11 times higher risk of death from any cause and a 17 times higher risk of death due to heart problems.
